Future Wimbledon
This entry for thoughts on the future of Wimbledon Town Centre came second in the competition, organised in 2014. The scheme considered all aspects of the retail and working experience, not only the urban redevelopment, but included ideas for phone apps for menus and buying in shops, collection points for things you bought near to bus stops, train stations and car parks, similar to apps and services we now have as our day to day experience. On the urban design side the scheme developed ideas for the large white car park offering a blank facade to the centre of town, with a similar scheme to that presented now implemented, opening up the upper floors for additional retail and commercial spaces. It also looked at diverting traffic to allow a pedestrianised section between the theatre and the station, covered with new glass canopies in part, but allowing the redevelopment of the poor quality buildings in this part of town.
